GHB also known as Gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid is a substance that occurs naturally in the central nervous system of human beings. It is also naturally occurring in wine, beef, small citrus fruits, and almost all animals in small amounts. GHB is categorized as an illegal drug in many countries.
GHB is used in medical settings as a general anesthetic, to treat conditions such as insomnia, clinical depression, narcolepsy, and alcoholism, and to improve athletic performance. GHB is also used illegally to get intoxicated and as a date rape drug. GHB is most commonly found in the form of a salt.

- Fantasy
GHB use effects are similar to those of alcohol and ecstasy. GHB use produces effects such as:
- Euphoria
- Disinhibition
- Enhance Sensuality
- Empathogenesis
When taken in larger doses, GHB use produces effects such as:
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Agitation
- Visual Disturbances
- Depressed Breathing
- Amnesia
- Unconsciousness
- Death
GHB use effects can last from an hour and half to three hours. It can last even longer if you take bigger doses of GHB. Taking GHB with alcohol or combining it with other drugs can lead to vomiting, unrouseable sleep and potentially death. GHB use recreationally is usually taken in amounts between 500mg and 3,000mgs. When GHB use is recreational it comes in a white crystalline powder and is dissolved in water to form a clear solution.
Some chemicals will convert into GHB while in the stomach and bloodstream. GHB use can easily be manufactured at home with very little knowledge of chemistry as it only involves an alkali hydroxide to form the resulting GHB salt.
GHB use is big in the club and rave scene because it supposedly enhances the user’s experiences of being in a club, party or rave. Smaller doses of GHB can act as a stimulant or aphrodisiac. GHB use is also big among athletes. GHB has been show to elevate human growth hormone vivo.
GHB is also labeled the date rape drug much like Rohypnol. The salt form of GHB is extremely salty but it is colorless and odorless and is easy to add to drinks that will mask the flavor. GHB has been used in many cases involving sexual assault usually when the victim has also been drinking.
GHB use is hard to detect in urine drug screens because the sample must be taken within 8-12 hours of GHB ingestion and cannot be tested at home. GHB use can be detected through hair for months after it has been used.
GHB use has many deadly mixes. The most well-known deadly mix with GHB is alcohol. GHB has been shown to slow down the elimination of alcohol in a person’s body. When an overdose due to GHB use happens it can be really hard to treat because of its multiple effects on the body. GHB doses above 3,500mgs can often cause life-threatening respiratory depression and cardiac arrest. The way doctors can combat a GHB use overdose is with other medications and to induce vomiting.
GHB use is not as big as it once was but still is used recreationally by addicts and alcoholics everywhere. GHB is entirely illegal for recreational use in the United States.
